  1. UBS Dress Code as “Precise as a Swiss Watch”

The Swiss are nothing if not precise. The Wall Street Journal got its hands on a 40-page grooming manual that Swiss bank UBS recently distributed to its employees. And it’s pretty unbelievable. Offering both general advice (Don’t eat garlic and onions; don’t wear socks that are too short and show skin while sitting) and gender specific pointers (“Light makeup consisting of foundation, mascara and discreet lipstick ... will enhance your personality”),  the manual reads more like style tips from a fashion magazine.

  2. The Facebook World

I’ve always loved maps. I love locating countries and cities that I’ve visited and those that I intend to in the future. A Facebook intern has taken it step farther and created a new map based on something much more topical than the distribution of population or forests—it’s based on the distribution Facebook friends.

  3. Amazing Video of Metrodome Roof Collapse

Seeing the before and after shots of the Metrodome in Minneapolis gives you a hint that the moment of the domed stadium’s roof collapse must have been something to see. But you don’t really get that sense until you see video from several angles.

  4. $65 for Smurfberries? You’ve Got to Be Kidding Me

I downloaded a free iPhone game a few days ago called Smurfs Village for my daughter. Watching over her shoulder, I was horrified to see her make it to a screen inviting her to make something called an “in app purchase.” Apparently, I’m not the only parent uncomfortable with my child being offered Smurfberries for a price.

  5. Village Voice Declares Pat Best Twitterer

Thanks to the Village Voice for declaring my Twitter feed a favorite at their first annual Web Awards. I was on hand Tuesday night to pick up my prize, which included a huge foam finger and a oversized can of Four Loko. I declined host Todd Barry’s invitation to chug it on stage, but promised I’d crack it open on a night when I didn’t have to set my alarm for 3 am.

  6. John Lennon and Monday Night Football

At NY1 today we’ve been reflecting on the death of John Lennon. It was 30 years ago today that he was shot in front of his Central Park West apartment building. I want to share two fascinating video clips related to that story, both which involve Howard Cosell.

  7. BBC Radio Host’s Freudian Slip Gets Funny Analysis

Britain’s Culture Secretary is Jeremy Hunt. But on a live radio program this morning, BBC host James Naughtie mistakenly called him Jeremy Cunt. The error was clearly inadvertent, but the predictable complaints followed. As did the e-mails from those who thought it funny. LISTEN TO AUDIO

  8. “Let It Be” Video from an All-Star Cast Promotes Norway TV

UPDATE: We’ve figured out who was singing.

This is the most amazing piece of video. I’m still trying to figure out who all of the voices belong to and how they combined the performances on CGI, but you must watch. Roger Moore, Huey Lewis, George Wendt, Katerina Witt, Alberto Tomba, etc, etc, etc singing the Beatles.

  9. Introducing the Smartest Glove in Town

I know pink’s not my color. But I’m seriously considering a pair of these. I thought the New York Times had stumbled upon a great new trend after reading their Style section piece on fingerless gloves for texters in yesterday’s paper. But today, they one-upped themselves, introducing readers to the Smartphone glove.
