New York Magazine calls us “a quaint-but-still-useful” news roundup. I’ll take it. Our SOS Week got the attention of the people in charge of the magazine’s weekly Approval Matrix. Pat’s Papers fell in the low-brow quadrant, though I happily noted we were hugging the axis on that one. Our venerable neighbors include the continued box-office success of “Little Fockers,” Katy Perry’s new B-side and “giant chunks of beef fat.” The fact that the site is running out of money? New York Magazine says that’s despicable.

Thank you for all of your messages of support last week for “Pat’s Papers SOS.” Your responses, and particularly the action you took, mean a lot to us. Most notably, we were able to double the number of subscribers to our daily e-mail version of Pat’s Papers. Traffic in all areas of the site was up last week, and we were contacted by several potential partners who have pledged to bring us advertising, traffic, or both.

The stories beginning to trickle out of the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas got me thinking about how much times have changed. Just four years ago, not a single iPhone existed. And remember back even further when Discmans were the only option for listening to music on the go. The rate of change over the past decade is almost unimaginable. Except, apparently, if you were one the folks who created a very prescient series of AT&T ads back in 1993.

For this Ted Williams, it’s his voice, not his baseball swing that’s made him famous. On a whim, a videographer for the Columbus Dispatch recorded audio of Williams, a homeless man who frequently set up shop near an exit ramp with a sign advertising his ““God-given gift of voice.” The paper put up the video and sat back in awe as media outlets around the country started champing at the bit to get a hold of Williams.
