Patrons of a Los Angeles karaoke club didn’t expect much when a young woman named Karen got up to sing. But they were blown away when she opened her mouth and belted out several pitch-perfect songs by Jewel. The astonished crowd treated her like a rock star, chanting Karen, Karen. Imagine their surprise to find out that Karen actually was a rock star.

I did the entire NY1 “In the Papers” segment on George Steinbrenner. The obituaries, editorials, columns and analysis in all of the papers was excellent. The New York Times, New York Post and New York Daily News deserve the most credit for page upon page of excellent coverage.

Sting said it’s the “biggest band I’ve ever played with.” I thoroughly enjoyed his three-hour show at Lincoln Center last night, as he teamed up with the Royal Philharmonic to perform symphonic arrangements from his repertoire.

Common sense should be rewarded. So I draw your attention to a sensible ad in the New York Times today. Bank of America bought a full-page ad to tout its new policy on debit card overdrafts. This is meant to end, for once and all, the possibility that you’ll get stuck paying $40 for a sandwich just because it happened to put you a couple of dollars past the balance in your bank account.
