  1. The Perfect (Airline) Cup Size

Through a combination of scheduling, price and the destinations I’m visiting this summer, I’m spending a lot of time on Delta flights over the next few weeks. That means I’m flush with observations, both big and small, including one that was served up to me just this morning. Delta, it seems, has stumbled upon the perfect cup size. I’m not talking about the flight attendants. I’m talking about the size of the plastic cups they use when they pour you a drink.

  2. Not Every Lead Should Be Chased

Here’s some advice for aspiring TV reporters: Sometimes, it’s not a good idea to chase down a story. Like, for example, if your interview subject is in the middle of a busy skateboarding halfpipe and you are several times the size of him. Someone sent me this clip of an over-zealous reporter in Florida. Instead of interviewing him, the reporter manages to body-check his teenage subject..

  3. Twitter Is In a Bad Mood on Thursdays

They may only be 140 characters long, but it turns out that Twitter messages have a lot to say. The computer science department at Northeastern University analyzed over 300 million tweets to get a sense of the nation’s mood. And in a nutshell, this is what they found: If you’re looking for someone to share your good mood, avoid East Coasters on Thursdays around noon.

  4. Where Have All the Teenage Drivers Gone?

I got my driver’s license the day I turned 16. I couldn’t wait. I remember it as one of the most important days of my life. So I was surprised to read that kids these days don’t feel the same way. According to the Star Tribune, the number of 16 and 17-year-old drivers is at an all-time low.

  5. My Smart Phone Just Got Smarter

After Friday’s press conference I was a little irked with Apple but that doesn’t mean I don’t love a lot of the stuff they come up with. Everyone’s been griping about the iPhone 4 but I’ve been happy as a clam since downloading Apple’s June operating system upgrade for my slightly-outdated 3GS iPhone. My favorite feature is an unheralded enhancement to the calendar. It’s like having a secretary with psychic powers. It really is all about the the little things.

  6. The Case for High-Speed Rail to Montreal

I spent last Christmas in Quebec. Our primary intention was to ski, but we spent the first night in Montreal. So I know exactly how long the drive takes. With a smooth border crossing, it’s about 7 hours from Manhattan to Montreal. So why does the Amtrak train take 11 hours?

  7. 2nd Annual Poutine Dinner

Rest assured that poutine isn’t a regular part of my diet. But for the past two years it’s been a nice excuse to hold a Canada Day trivia contest in conjunction with Gothamist. We gathered with the winners at Mile End in Brooklyn last night to indulge in their Montreal-inspired menu of poutine and smoked meat.

  8. Apple Says Antenna a Non-Issue for Most, Then Offers Solution for Everyone

It’s easy to blame the user for holding their iPhone the wrong way or blame AT&T for its network quality, but a good sincere “we’re sorry” early in the antenna controversy would’ve earned Apple some hard and fast respect. For all of its brilliance in product development and marketing, Apple seems unaware of the fact that holding back key information from customers and investors is dishonest. The company underplayed Steve Jobs’ health problems last year and during today’s press conference it tried to underplay the iPhone antenna issue.

  9. Oil Plug Inspires Slick Headlines

The plugging of BP’s oil spill was fodder for lots of clever headlines this morning. One eagle-eyed reader alerted us to the way the Tampa Tribune handled the story.
