The Wall Street Journal has a look at the country’s ultimate safe houses in this morning’s paper. From Los Angeles, a home with wine cellar that doubles as a bunker and a helipad on the roof designed for emergency evacuations. In New Orleans, homeowners raised their important spaces to protect from flooding and imported windows from Germany that can withstand 150-mile-an-hour winds. And a tornado-resistant house in Missouri features 12-foot reinforced steel walls and “windows tested to survive a two by four traveling at 40 miles an hour.” The Journal says some of the features could help change home-building for the rest of us.
