Haiti: One Year Later

I highly recommend the follow-up story on the front page of the New York Times this morning. It’s a look back at Haiti a year after its devastating earthquake. The picture is of Fabienne Jean, a dancer who was interviewed shortly after the earthquake. When her leg had to be amputated, she was offered medical care in the US but instead, opted to stay in Haiti. She still dances and has hopes of opening a dance school.
The Times says there is “little reason to be hopeful” in Haiti these days, ticking off the country’s many woes: political unrest, the outbreak of cholera, millions of displaced citizens. Despite the many challenges, some Haitians, like Jean, “have started to find some equilibrium.”
