Brussels Sprouts Grow ‘Designer Vegetable Status’

“It’s like a scene from a childhood nightmare,” says the San Jose Mercury News—fields and fields of brussels sprouts. California is the epicenter of this country’s sprout harvest, which has become a very profitable venture in recent years. Its “designer vegetable status” was cultivated about 20 years ago, and is due in part to the efforts of Dutch scientists, who began breeding different varieties without the sulfur-y taste many of us remember from our childhood dinner plates.
