‘Baby Doc’ Arrested in Haiti

Haiti’s former dictator, Jean-Claude “Baby Doc’’ Duvalier, was charged with embezzlement and corruption yesterday reports the Miami Herald this morning. It is unclear why Duvalier, who has been living in exile in France since the mid-1980s, returned to Haiti this week. The country is already in a tense political situation, says the Herald, as officials try and decide how to proceed with an election runoff. Onlookers say yesterday’s indictment isn’t the end of the legal issues facing “Baby Doc”—several Haitians interviewed by the paper say they plan to file human rights violations against the former dictator this week.
