One of the film’s screenwriters—Brian Doyle Murray (who’d caddied, along with his brother Bill.) He wrote the movie with Doug Kenney (one of the writers of National Lampoon’s Animal House.)  Kenney’s Dad was a tennis instructor at posh clubs in Ohio, and he had plenty of stories that made it into the film.  He wanted Caddyshack to be a biting satirical film (like an Evelyn Waugh novel) and a real class war.  He was demoralized by the puppet gopher.
