What Happened to Baseball Nicknames?

Sure we have A-Rod, but that’s nothing compared to “The Meal Ticket” or “The Yankee Clipper.” San Francisco Chronicle sports writer David Bush laments the sad state of baseball nicknames in today’s paper, writing that instead of anything truly unique, we tend to simply lop off a syllable or make a double reduction. Not like the old days when nicknames were inspired by everything from geography (“Georgia Peach”; “Arkansas Traveler”) to skill on the field (“Charlie Hustle”; “The Ryan Express”).
