The St. Petersburg Times says after a lengthy investigation they’ve found that a group claiming to send care packages to troops overseas plagiarized thank-you notes from the websites of other, established veterans groups. The paper says after six months of trying to track down the group’s leadership, all they found was a “network of rented mailboxes.”
The non-profit group is called Navy Veterans and operates in several states. The Times says in finally located the group’s founder, who claimed to be a Vietnam vet despite any paperwork to support his claim. After the paper pushed him about the activities of his non-profit, he vacated the home he had lived in for a decade and left no forwarding address. Both the IRS and the government are now investigating.
