Unmarried and Living Together? That’s Illegal in Florida

Here’s something I didn’t know: under current Florida law, it is illegal for unmarried couples to live together. Call “cohabitation,” the Sun Sentinel says it’s a law harkening back to the 1800s, a second-degree misdemeanor punishable by sixty days in jail. A lawmaker is now trying to update a slew of state laws, including one that bans adultery. Despite the anachronism of the statutes, political experts say the lawmaker could face an uphill battle from social conservatives “who lobby hard on ‘family values’ issues.” In addition to the cohabitation and adultery statutes, he has targeted a law that makes it illegal for bikers to ride with no hands.
