“The Day the Golden Gate Bridge Flattened”

The San Jose Mercury News has a great archival photo on its front page. That was taken on May 24, 1987, when more than 300,000 crossed the Golden Gate Bridge in celebration of the landmark’s 50th birthday. So many people crossed the bridge that day, says the paper, that it caused its middle arc to sag almost seven feet. Needless to say, people won’t be allowed to swarm the bridge on its 75th anniversary, today.
