Tax Identity Thief Thwarted By Own Mistake

You’d think getting your identity stolen would be an inconvenience, but for one Mississippi legislator, it was actually a boon. The Clarion-Ledger says State Rep. Bubba Carpenter got a $1,700 refund check from the IRS, and he didn’t even have to file his taxes. That’s because a thief had done it for him. But because the thief had supplied the wrong bank account number after ticking off “electronic deposit,” the IRS sent Carpenter a check instead.
