Target vs. (Canadian) Target

It’s Target vs. Target, the bulls-eye vs. the maple leaf. The Minneapolis Star Tribune says the Minnesota-based retailer is fighting in court for the right to use its name in Canada, where it plans to open more than 100 stores in 2013—its first planned expansion outside the US. The problem? There’s a Canadian retailer called Target Apparel, which is counter-suing to the tune of $250 million, also for copyright infringement. The Tribune says it’s not uncommon to have international trademark disputes: Burger King is called Happy Jack’s in Australia because of a similar situation.
