Splitting Seconds at the Olympics

The Washington Post has a great graphic in this morning’s paper, explaining how exactly officials implement fraction-of-a-second timing during the Olympics. Track and swimming events have the most elaborate timing set-ups. It all starts once an athlete’s feet touch the starting blocks, which are designed to tell if they push off even a tenth of a second too early.
