Southeast US Leads Country in Antibiotic Resistance

People in the southeast use far more antibiotics than folks in the rest of the country, reports USA Today this morning. This has lead to worries that they’ll become resistant to the drug’s benefits. Unfortunately, it seems to already be happening. Researchers point to urinary tract infections as an example. People suffering from UTIs have become more resistant to traditional treatments, a problem that is notably worse in regions where antibiotic use is the highest.
