Sewanee College Says ‘Enough,’ Drops Tuition

Enough is enough says one liberal arts college in Tennessee. Instead of following the rising-tuition trend, Sewanee College announced recently that it will cut its $46,000 annual tuition by ten percent. The New York Times says administrators hope the rate cut will lure students who might otherwise opt to go to a state school. Sewanee is alone in its gamble—it’s the only US school to drop its annual bill this year; only 12 have frozen their costs. Experts say the plan goes against something economists call the “Chivas Regal effect,” the notion that “high price equals high quality.”
