Washington Post columnist Michael Gerson says his teenage sons may never accompany him to the movies again after the “Christmas Day incident.” That’s when, while watching “Les Miserables,” their father was reduced to a “sobbing, embarrassing mess.” Gerson says there are several reasons a grown man might cry during Victor Hugo’s soaring epic, including “the hope that life is a story, that all the suffering, vulgarity, pity and sacrifice add up to something and lead somewhere.”
