NY Gay Marriage Decision Unlikely to Sway Other States

Will New York’s legalization of gay marriage make it easier for other states to follow in its footsteps? It’s complicated, says the New York Times. Most of the states with lots of support for same-sex marriage have already acted on the issue. And in the remaining states, either constitutional bans (29 states) or laws against it (12 states) will make the road forward tough for reformers. Regardless of the terrain, activists say the victory in New York provided a “new political model” to emulate. Gay-rights advocates say Maryland and Rhode Island are the next two states they plan to focus their efforts on.
