There’s a great article in the Arizona Republic this morning about how catalogs prey on our aspirations and childhood memories in order to sell us stuff. The goal, according to an executive at Pottery Barn, is not to make people say, oh, that’s what my living room looks like. No, the goal is to convince them that the “Expedition Leather Cube is all that’s needed to transform a suburban tract home into a Napa farmhouse.”
