Gen. McChrystal Opened Up to Journalist During Layover

The New York Times asks a question I spent hours trawling Google for an answer to yesterday: “Why would a top military commander allow a journalist so much unfettered access to his inner circle?” Turns out that due to the ash from the Icelandic volcano, the journalist who penned the controversial Rolling Stone article, Michael Hastings, was stranded with General McChrystal and his staff in Paris for two days. Hastings then traveled to Berlin with the General and his staff and later accompanied them on several trips to Afghanistan. Asking whether General McChrystal had opened up because he thought of Rolling Stone as a less than serious magazine; the editor in chief replied that it “would not be the first time a political figure opened up to the magazine.”
