Commute Costs Make Suburbs as Expensive as City

There’s an interesting story in today’s Boston Globe about people who move to the suburbs in search of more affordable housing. Turns out, the added transportation costs from their commutes mitigate any money they saved by moving away from the city. The paper says people often fail to factor in transportation costs to the 30 percent of their income experts recommend setting aside for living costs. The data is specific to Boston, but I’d be curious to see if the situation was similar in the country’s other major cities.
