Commemorating 150 Years Since the Civil War

One hundred and fifty years ago today, the firing on Fort Sumter prompted the start of the US Civil War, a conflict and historical moment that the Washington Post says gave birth to modern America. In honor of the anniversary, the Post put together an impressive 22-page special section. There’s an interesting article about what the weather was like on April 16, 1861 in Charleston; a good timeline of the war and its many battles, and an interesting essay summarizing “five myths about why the South seceded.” I highly suggest trawling through the entire section, which features dozens and dozens of essays, video pieces, articles, graphics and historical accounts.
