‘Big Heads’ Star of Hoosiers’ Basketball Season

You’d be forgiven for thinking all fans of the Indiana Hoosiers have big heads. The Indianapolis Star says huge cardboard heads have become the fan accessory du jour at home games. Called Big Heads, the two-foot-by-three-foot cutouts feature anyone from celebrities Halle Berry and David Letterman to the Hoosiers’ public address announcer.

The team’s marketing department is responsible for producing the larger than life heads and is constantly polling the student body for new suggestions. Currently, there are about 150 heads in circulation. Used primarily as a free throw distraction for their opponents, the Star says it’s unclear how successful the tactic has proved but to consider this: “IU’s foes have made just 67.2 percent of their free throws at Assembly Hall this year, compared to 73 percent when the Hoosiers are on the road.”
