Automakers Turn Away From Spare Tires

Soon, no one will have a spare tire to spare. They’re “going the way of the typewriter and transistor radio,” says the LA Times, as more automakers choose not to include a spare tire with their new models. In a bid to decrease a vehicle’s weight, boost gas mileage and save some money, repair kits have become a popular replacement. Unfortunately, they don’t work as well. Explains an industry expert: “Manufacturers do a lot of little things to squeeze more of the last bits of toothpaste out of the tube. Weight reduction is just one of them and spare tires are a tempting target.” According to a recent analysis, more than 13 percent of the new cars for sale in this country, don’t include a spare tire with purchase.
