AP Corrects WWII Caption after 65 Years

The AP has set the record straight after 65 years. The St. Petersburg Times reports that the wire service recently corrected the caption on one of its most famous images.  A WWII veteran contacted a reporter after seeing the photo, which was said to portray the famous Bataan Death March, in a local paper. He and several other veterans who fought at Bataan confirmed that the image was not of the death march.

The new caption reads: “At the time of its release, this photo was identified as dead and wounded being carried by fellow prisoners during the Bataan Death March in April 1942 ... Subsequent information from military archivists, the National Archives and Records Administration, and surviving prisoners, strongly suggests that this photo may actually depict a burial detail at Camp O’Donnell.”
