Alex Trebek Chases Down Robber

This longtime “Jeopardy!” host was injured yesterday after leaping out of bed and giving chase to a burglar who tried to steal cash from his hotel room. Who is Alex Trebek? The San Francisco Chronicle says Trebek woke up around 2:30 AM and saw someone lurking around his hotel room. As he chased the burglar into the hallway, he ruptured his Achilles tendon and then fell on the floor, bruising his other leg in the process.

Police later arrested a 56-year-old woman for the attempted burglary. According to TMZ, the woman stole cash and a bracelet his mother gave him, which she stashed near the ice machine on his floor. Despite his crutches, Trebek completed his hosting duties at the National Geographic World Championship, which was sponsored by Google this year.

The incident inspired the New York Times (after wishing Trebek a speedy recovery) to compose a list of “awful “Jeopardy!” jokes.” A sample: “If you think that was tough, you should see what Mr. Trebek does to the contestants who don’t phrase their responses in the form of a question.”
