Boston Wins Stanley Cup; Vancouver Erupts in Riots

“I guess there is a Santa Claus.” That’s what the owner of the Boston Bruins had to say after his team became Stanley Cup champions last night for the first time in 39 years. Their 4-0 victory last night in Game Seven over the Canucks was due, in large part, to goalkeeper Tim Thomas’ stellar performance says the Boston Globe.

It also prompted this question from Globe columnist Bob Ryan: “Will we spawn a new worldwide generation of flopping, diving, sprawling, swatting, generally pro-active goaltenders now that 37-year-old Tim Thomas has carried the Boston Bruins to a Stanley Cup championship?”

Vancouver fans didn’t take their defeat lying down. Actually, quite the opposite. Check out the front page of the The Province:

Riots broke out all over the city following the Canucks loss as fans smashed windows, torched cars and overturned dumpsters reports the Vancouver Sun. Police have set up a Facebook page in hopes of identifying those who took part in the mayhem.
