Somewhere in New York City, a chest of golden coins lies buried. $10,000 dollars worth, to be exact. And to find the booty, all you have to do is follow the clues posted online by a couple of pirates. Actually, they’re posted by a couple of guys with pirate puppets. The New York Times talked to the gentleman behind the modern treasure hunt, who say the idea was inspired by a desire to increase traffic to their website, which showcases their many puppet performances. Regardless of their motivation, the men, who would not reveal their identities to the Times “citing fear for their personal safety,” say the first person to find the treasure gets to keep it. They will post a video each week starting today, which hunters are expected to decode, but they offered up the first clue as a freebie: The wooden box is hidden somewhere in the five boroughs but it is not in Central Park.
