This morning, I read that scientists at Cornell University have created two new apple varieties. They’re calling them “New York 1” and “New York 2.” Seriously? The best they can do is to borrow the name of NY1?  It’s not like there’s been a run on apple names recently. Granny Jones was taken? So was Silvery Delicious? My only solace is that the New York 1 apple doesn’t suck. One farmer describes it as “crisp” and “forgiving.” I guess I should try to be the same. I just hope Gwenyth Paltrow doesn’t get wind of this, in case she’s thinking about having more children.

I did a little research and it turns out there are hundreds of apple names. Not so many, however, to make New York 1 any less uninspired.
