Tax Day Not What It Used To Be

It’s a staple of television news coverage: the lineups at the post office on tax deadline day. But while it’s still a fun story, it’s not nearly the story it used to be. Many post offices have given up on their old policy of staying open until midnight on April 15th. With so many people e-filing, they don’t need to.
And I think it’s important that reporters keep the “rush” in perspective on this deadline day. The IRS expects 140 million tax returns this year. Two weeks ago, 90 million of them had already been filed. A lot of them already have their refunds. This year, the last-minute filers truly are the minority.
