Supermarket Ethics Test

How’s this for an ethics test: What would you do if, on a trip to the supermarket, you finished your shopping and then discovered that there were no employees around to check you out—or prevent you from stealing everything in your cart. That’s exactly what happened last Friday—Good Friday—when a computer glitch forced the doors of a New Zealand supermarket open an hour before employees showed up for work. Surprisingly, many of the customers used the self-checkout lanes and paid for their goods. Some, upon discovering the absence of any personnel went hog wild, filled their carts and booked it to the parking lot. According to Sky News Australia, the store’s manager said “the glitch made him look a bit of a dickhead.”
