Poutine in the News

In July, for Canada Day, I teamed up with Gothamist to run a Canada trivia contest. Three readers joined me for their prize: a serving of poutine.
One of those readers, Colin Hunt, has tipped me off to an important development in the world of french fries, gravy and cheese curds. An article in the New Yorker (and companion podcast) this week asks if its popularity has risen to the point that it’s become “Canada’s national dish?”
I don’t particularly like poutine. I mean, I don’t hate it. But I only have it from time to time and rarely make a point of ordering it when in Canada. (Something I noted with our crew on our Gothamist poutine night before delivering it to them.)
But maybe the fact that I chose it as the prize for our contest reinforces the theory that really is Canada’s national dish.

Popular poutine places include some McDonald’s in Canada.
