O America! Canada Salutes American Songbook

On Canada Day this year, I stood up in front of a crowd at Joe’s Pub and belted out O Canada. Now the team that staged the event is hosting another one to commemorate September 11.

Called “Canada Sings the American Songbook: A Canadian Tribute to New York,” the night of music will feature a “top-flight roster of Canadian musical talent performing a set list that samples over 100 years of American song writing.” But sadly, fans, no musical stylings of Pat Kiernan.

It will, however, feature some big names, including tenor Ben Heppner, Tom Cochrane, Natalie MacMaster and Paul Shaffer of “Late Show with David Letterman” fame and “promises to shed new light on the American songbook -  from Gershwin to Guthrie, the Duke to the Boss, Marvin to Carole to Cole to Joel and beyond - all while celebrating the enduring strength of a singular city.”
