| Dow plunges amid debt crisis | 27 |
| British election results unclear | 16 |
| Attempts to contain oil spill | 16 |
| Neanderthal DNA shows human link | 11 |
Today’s top story, with 27 front-page headlines, was the continuing European debt crisis and a plunge in the Dow index yesterday which may have been a response to that, though unconfirmed reports circulated that a trader’s typographical error may have been to blame. Sixteen newspapers reported on the result of the British election, which was still unclear today after none of the three main parties won a majority of seats in the House of Commons. The same number of papers ran articles on attempts to contain the oil spill. Appearing in 11 publications was news that scientists have found a link between Neanderthal DNA and human DNA, suggesting the two interbred more than 80,000 years ago.
