Our top story today, with 17 headlines, was news that the US and Russia have both agreed to cut their nuclear arsenals in a deal struck during Russian president Medvdev’s visit to the White House this week. The GOP’s inability to prevent passage of the health care bill or any amendments to it made headlines in 12 newspapers, while news that ‘I Spy’ actor Robert Culp has died at age 79 appeared in nine. Receiving eight front-page mentions each were the continuing child abuse scandals in the Catholic Church, which the Vatican is accused of covering up, and pension reforms to be implemented after a new bill was passed in the Senate yesterday. A discovery that suggests an even earlier human ancestor than previously believed to exist was a front-page story in seven publications. Six papers provided coverage of Bank of America’s decision to forgive some oustanding loans to help alleviate the foreclosure crisis. Five newspapers reported on the Infantino baby sling recall after three infants’ deaths were linked to the product, while the same number covered President Obama’s signature on an order preventing federal funding for abortions, which was part of the deal struck by anti-abortion Democrats in exchange for passage of the health bill.
