Diet Puts Cross-Eyed Opossum’s Fame in Jeopardy

I don’t think I’ve ever read about a celebrity whose popularity hinged on the fact that their eyes are crossed. But according to a little blurb I read in the New York Post this morning, that’s exactly what has made Heidi, the cross-eyed opossum, so popular in Germany. You’ll remember Germany is where Kanut the orphaned polar bear and Paul the psychic octopus also found fame.

But apparently, there are some problems on the horizon for Heidi.  A new diet that zookeepers have put her on is threatening to turn straighten out her eyes and perhaps, diminish her appeal. Apparently, vets think that fatty deposits behind Heidi’s eyes are causing her problems:
